BRPT Announces First Andrea Patterson Scholarship Winner

Polysomnography Student at Sandhills Community College in North Carolina Receives $2,500

McLean, VA – January 20, 2011 – The Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) today announced that Dana Marie Mason Daniels, of Raleigh, North Carolina is the winner of the first Andrea Patterson Memorial Scholarship. Daniels is a student enrolled in the Polysomnography Technology Associates Degree Program at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Daniels worked for 17 years as a telecommunications specialist, before her company eliminated her division due to the struggling economy. Following extensive research into the allied health fields, coupled with a deep personal connection to sleep disorders through family members affected with Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Daniels was eager to take on a new challenge in the field of sleep technology.

Said BRPT President Janice East, RPSGT, R. EEG T., “The BRPT is honored to recognize such a determined and hard working student as Dana with this award. I’m impressed by her motivation and strong interest in patient care, professional growth and leadership. I’m certain she will go on to make great contributions to our profession.”

According to Bonnie Robertson, CRT, RPSGT, Chair of the Andrea Patterson Memorial Scholarship Committee and past BRPT president, “As a result of today’s tough economic times, Dana had to pursue a new career path from scratch. She was adamant about educational training and starting on the right track. By immersing herself in a comprehensive academic program she is laying the foundation for a strong career in polysomnography.”

“I’m extremely excited and grateful to receive this award,” said Dana Marie Mason Daniels. “The tuition grant will ease the financial burden, allowing me to focus on my coursework and clinicals. My goal is to someday become the manager of a sleep center. I can’t wait to apply what I’m learning now, and what I’m certain to learn along the way, to helping patients with sleep disorders.”

Daniels is on track to graduate in the Spring of 2012 after which she plans to take the RPSGT examination. She is a student member of the NC Association of Sleep Technologists and the National Sleep Foundation. In addition, Daniels holds a Bachelors of Science degree from East Carolina University and an Associate of Arts degree from Peace College.

The Andrea Patterson Memorial Scholarship Program, named in honor of an early and highly regarded leader in the field of sleep technology, awards a $2,500 tuition grant each year to a promising student of polysomnography. Scholarship applicants must be enrolled in or accepted by a CAAHEP-accredited program in PSG or a CoARC-accredited program with a PSG add-on.

Four Basic A-STEP Modules Dropped from RPSGT Pathway #1 and Pathway #4 Eligibility Requirements; Four New Supplementary Modules Added

The Board of Registered Polysomnograhic Technologists has announced a modification in the A-STEP self-learning module requirement for RPSGT Pathway #1 and Pathway #4 candidates. Candidates testing after January 1, 2011 will not be required to complete the following four basic A-STEP modules:

  • Evaluation of Sleep
  • Pediatrics
  • Patient Assessment
  • Patient Interaction and Professional Behavior

The following four A-STEP supplementary modules have been added to the Pathway #1 and Pathway #4 eligibility requirements:

  • Supplementary Module 1: Waveforms
  • Supplementary Module 2: Sleep Stages
  • Supplementary Module 3: Scoring Respiratory Events
  • Supplementary Module 4: Arousals, EEG Abnormalities, Movements and Cardiac Events

Candidates applying to sit for the RPSGT exam under Pathway #1 or Pathway #4 and planning to test after January 1, 2011 must submit proof of the four designated supplementary A-STEP modules to establish eligibility to test. The total number of A-STEP modules required to establish eligibility under Pathways #1 and #4 remains at 14.

Notes BRPT President Janice East, “The decision to realign the Pathway #1 and Pathway #4 eligibility requirements was made after a careful review of RPSGT candidate performance over several testing cycles. Candidates have performed consistently well in the areas covered by the four basic modules eliminated from the RPSGT eligibility requirements. The four supplementary modules address areas of consistent weakness in candidate performance. We are always working to balance the overall cost associated with sitting for the RPSGT exam with our profession’s strong commitment to education. With that in mind, we have held the number of required modules at 14. We want to emphasize, however, that candidates – and particularly Pathway #1 candidates, who are not required to complete a full A-STEP program – are strongly encouraged to complete all A-STEP self-learning modules as part of their preparation to sit for the RPSGT exam.”

Full information regarding eligibility requirements for the RPSGT exam is available at brpt.taupecatstudios.dev.

BRPT 30th Anniversary Survey of RPSGTs

» Summary of Findings Available for Download

McLean, VA – April 26, 2010 – Findings from the Board of Polysomnographic Technologists’ (BRPT) 30th Anniversary Survey of RPSGTs are available for download.

Highlights include the following:

  • Satisfaction with the RPSGT credential remains high.
  • Despite the slow economy, half of respondents feel that RPSGTs are in great demand due to a shortage of sleep techs.
  • Respondents are very concerned with the perception that the field is not a distinct allied health profession.
  • Half of respondents continue to believe there is a demand for an advanced credential.

“It’s very important for us to understand sleep technologists’ interests, perspectives on the future, and their areas of concern,” said Janice East, RPSGT, R. EEG T., President of the BRPT Board of Directors. “Their insights are invaluable as we continually work to strengthen the RPSGT credential and better serve our candidates.”

This study was conducted by the BRPT online as a 53-question survey with a mixture of closed and open-ended questions. Invitations to participate were extended to RPSGTs only. The survey was made available on August 25, 2009 and delivered to 8,074 RPSGTs via email (Note: It is possible that, in a limited number of instances, the survey was forwarded to a non-registered tech; however, the overwhelming majority of respondents self-identified as RPSGTs.). There were 967 responses, a solid 12% response rate, projectable to the universe of RPSGTs. Not all respondents answered all questions, although most questions had a 90% response rate.

The primary objectives of the study were:

  • To learn more about day-to-day working lives of RPSGTs.
  • To measure attitudes and perceptions about the RPSGT examination.
  • Where possible, to detect any differences in responses in this survey compared to the previous study conducted in 2007.
  • To measure interest in other areas.
