June RPSGT and CPSGT Exam Applications Available April 16
April 2, 2010
McLean, Virginia – April 2, 2010 –The Board of Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) announced the Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) and Certified Polysomnographic Technician (CPSGT) exam applications will be available on April 16 at brpt.taupecatstudios.dev. Applications for the RPSGT and CPSGT exams may be submitted at any point after that date. Approved candidates may schedule to test on any date after June 17 – the launch date for on-demand testing.
The BRPT has also announced a $100 increase in the fee for the RPSGT exam, the first increase in RPSGT exam fees in five years. When the application process re-opens on April 16 the RPSGT exam fee will be $450. Said BRPT President Janice East, RPSGT, R. EEG T., “A price increase is always difficult news, and we have worked to hold the RPSGT exam fee steady for a long time. The price increase comes, however, as we move to an on-demand testing model, providing our candidates with a great deal of flexibility in exam scheduling. Most significantly, this model will provide our candidates with immediate – real time – delivery of their exam results.”
Adds Becky Appenzeller, RPSGT, R. EEG T., CNIM, BRPT Immediate Past President and Chair of BRPT’s Exam Development Committee, “The BRPT has made a significant investment over the past two years in building our item bank and strengthening our exam development and delivery processes to a point which would allow us to move away from testing in fixed testing windows and into delivery of our exams on-demand. The lengthy process of exam scoring and results delivery has been a source of frustration for our candidates. We’re pleased to be able to offer increased flexibility in scheduling and immediate results delivery beginning after June 17.”
The exam fee for CPSGT candidates remains at $240. The CPSGT exam will also be offered on-demand.
Once authorized to take the RPSGT or CPSGT exam, candidates will be able to test on a date of their choosing. Approvals are valid until the CPR card submitted to establish eligibility expires, or up to a maximum of one year from the date of their approval. Candidates who are unsuccessful on one exam attempt will be able to re-apply immediately and will be able to re-test after a limited waiting period.
Adds BRPT Executive Director John Ganoe, CAE, “From the perspective of the BPRT Executive Office, the move to on-demand testing is really about candidate / customer service. What our candidates have asked for most often is more opportunities to test and – even more frequently – quick delivery of results. On-demand addresses both those candidate concerns. And, fixed testing windows have concentrated candidate activity in compressed periods of time, hindering the ability of our small staff to deliver quality customer service. We believe the flexibility of on-demand testing will enable us to be more responsive to individual candidates and, overall, raise our level of direct candidate service.”
In the on-demand testing model, once a candidate completes the computer-based exam, a pass/fail notification will immediately appear on the computer screen. The candidate will then ask the test center administrator to print out a detailed results report that the candidate will be able to take with them when they leave the Pearson VUE testing center. The BRPT will then be notified of final candidate results and will send a pass/fail kit within 15 days of the test date.

BRPT Announces March 2010 Testing Dates; Confirms Move to On Demand Testing
The March 2010 RPSGT exam testing window has been set for March 15-27. Deadline for submission of applications to test in the March window is February 16. RPSGT candidates are reminded that, beginning with the March 2010 exam, the RPSGT exam will be built against a new exam blueprint, developed following a 2009 Job Task Analysis. Says BRPT President Becky Appenzeller, RPSGT, R. EEG T., CNIM, “We had an extraordinarily strong response to our 2009 Job Task Analysis Survey. Our last Job Task Analysis was conducted four years ago, and there was clearly a great deal of interest on the part of RPSGTs in letting us know how our field has evolved. The core body of knowledge needed for the RPSGT exam,” says Appenzeller, “has remained constant, but some areas currently tested have declined in importance, while others have become more important. Those changes will be reflected in the new exam blueprint.”
The new exam blueprint will be available at brpt.taupecatstudios.dev beginning in mid-December, immediately after the close of the December 2009 testing window. An updated RPSGT exam candidate handbook, an updated study guide, and revised practice exams will be available in early 2010.
The March 2010 two-week window will be the final structured, two-week RPSGT exam testing window. Beginning in mid-June 2010 the RPSGT exam will be available to candidates “on demand.” After the close of the March testing window, candidates will be able to submit an application to test anytime after June 12. When an authorization to test is issued, candidates will be able to test on a date of their choosing, anytime during the one year period for which their authorization is valid. Candidates unsuccessful on one exam attempt will be able to re-test as soon as they feel they are prepared, without the necessity of waiting for the next fixed testing window.
The move to on demand testing was made possible by an aggressive effort to build out the RPSGT exam item bank of validated items, tested for psychometric reliability. The RPSGT item bank is now deep enough — contains a sufficient number of fully validated items — to permit the development of exam forms on an on-demand basis. “The big win for our candidates,” notes Becky Appenzeller, “is in real-time delivery of exam results. In our current model, candidates wait for about 20 business days after the close of an exam testing window for the results to be validated and available — a “post-equating” model, in psychometric terms. In June 2010 we will be able to deliver the exam using “pre-equated” items. A candidate will complete the exam, submit it, and receive a results report immediately, before leaving the Pearson VUE testing center. Our Exam Development Committee has worked very hard to get us to this point, but we truly believe the work was well worth it.”
Information about the 2010 RPSGT exam will be posted at brpt.taupecatstudios.dev beginning after the close of the December 2009 testing window on December 12. Additional information about “on demand” RPSGT testing will be posted to brpt.taupecatstudios.dev beginning in the first quarter of 2010.
Earlier this month the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) announced the development of the Certified Polysomnographic Technician (CPSGT) certificate exam, scheduled to be offered for the first time in March 2010. In the weeks since our initial announcement of the CPSGT Exam we have – as expected – heard from a wide range of sleep professionals, some very supportive of the certificate exam and some quite concerned that the new exam is not a positive step for our field. I wanted to take this opportunity to reach out to my fellow RPSGTs and our colleagues in the broader sleep community as we move forward with the development of the CPSGT Certificate exam.
I want to begin by pointing you to a feature on our website intended to address many of your questions about the CPSGT Exam. On our homepage, click on the CPSGT Certificate button and then on the link to questions about the certificate. This feature provides information about the development, administration and delivery of the CPSGT Exam, so I won’t address many of those details here. I want to focus instead on how we believe the CPSGT Exam will benefit our field, elevate the level of professionalism in sleep technology, and enhance the value of the RPSGT Credential.
The CPSGT Certificate is an entry level certificate to be earned by individuals new to the sleep field. By committing to earn the CPSGT Certificate, a CPSGT candidate makes a commitment to begin formal education in sleep and, then, to continuing education as he or she works toward the advanced, RPSGT Credential. An individual beginning a career in sleep will be asked to make an early commitment to professionalism, and that commitment is vital to our growing – and increasingly visible – profession.
The CPSGT Certificate is not positioned as a pre-requisite to the RPSGT Credential. RPSGT candidates are encouraged to sit for the RPSGT Exam when they have completed the eligibility requirements for the RPSGT Exam pathway they have chosen. However, the CPSGT Certificate is valid for a maximum of three years and is not renewable: within that three-year window a certificate holder is expected to earn the RPSGT Credential. Earning the CPSGT Certificate indicates that a sleep professional has moved quickly to build a solid base of knowledge in sleep, passed a competency-based exam, made a commitment to continuing education, and, most importantly, made a commitment to advancing toward earning the RPSGT Credential. The CPSGT Certificate, strongly supported by both the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Association of Sleep Technologists, will give our field a growing pool of individuals who have demonstrated – in a measurable way – a commitment to professionalism, to a code of ethical conduct, and to quality patient care.
BRPT is committed to a certification and credentialing program that serves our profession well and is firmly grounded in best credentialing practices. When the CPSGT Exam is firmly established, we look forward to moving ahead with the development of an advanced and/or specialty credential, continuing our move toward a strong, tiered credentialing program in sleep.
The investment BRPT will make during the remainder of 2009 and throughout 2010 in the development and delivery of the CPSGT Certificate exam is substantial. And, we believe that investment is a sound one: for individuals new to a career in sleep, for current RPSGTs, and for our patients. Please forward your comments and concerns about the CPSGT Exam to info@brpt.org. Our executive office staff will work to review and respond to all comments as quickly as possible.
Your commitment to your field is appreciated.
Sincerely,
Becky Appenzeller, RPSGT, R. EEG T., CNIM
President
BRPT Announces New “Certified Polysomnographic TechnicianSM” (CPSGTSM) Certificate for Sleep Professionals
September 3, 2009
Launch of Introductory, Exam-based Certificate for Sleep Professionals Set for March 2010
The Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT), the non-profit certification board that administers the exam to become a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), announces the development of a certificate-level exam. The new exam will be designated the “CPSGT” exam and a certificate holder will be a “Certified Polysomnographic Technician.”
The new certificate will not be a prerequisite to sitting for the RPSGT exam, but rather is being offered as an entry-level certificate for those entering the sleep technology profession.
The CPSGT exam will be offered for the first time in March 2010. The certificate will be time-limited and valid for three years/36 months, within which time a certificate holder must earn the RPSGT credential, or the CPSGT certificate expires.
“This is the first step in establishing a tiered credentialing system in sleep technology,” says BRPT President Becky Appenzeller, RPSGT, R. EEG T., CNIM. “We strongly believe an entry-level certificate will enhance professionalism in our field. Within a limited time, individuals new to sleep will be asked to make a commitment to education, to competency-based testing, and, once they have earned the certificate, to continuing education,” says Appenzeller.
Candidates will be able to sit for the exam with a minimum of three-months of full time experience in sleep and must hold a high school diploma or the equivalent, a current CPR/BLS certification, and verification of completion of a designated sub-set of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) A-STEP Self-Study Online Modules. Certificate holders will be required to earn 10 continuing education units each year they hold the certificate.
“Earning the certificate,” notes BRPT President-elect Janice East, RPSGT, R. EEG T. “means an individual new to sleep will make a serious commitment to learning and growing in the field. And, we strongly believe it enhances the value of the RPSGT designation, highlighting the RPSGT credential as an indicator of professional achievement in sleep technology.”
Clete Kushida, MD, PhD, RPSGT, President of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, sees the new certificate as a positive step for the field of sleep technology. According to Kushida, “Competency-based testing from the beginning of a technologist’s career is integral to the professional growth of sleep technologists and also to ensuring a highly-qualified pool of certified sleep personnel.”
Cindy Kistner, RPSGT, R. EEG T., President of the American Association of Sleep Technologists (AAST) echoes her colleagues in the professional sleep societies. “The certificate exam,” says Kistner, “elevates the level of professionalism in our field, starting from the first months of a career in sleep. At AAST, we are particularly enthusiastic about the commitment to continuing education required from certificate holders.”
Substantive work is well underway on development of the exam, which will be administered through Pearson VUE, BRPT’s testing partner. The exam will consist of 75 multiple-choice questions, with exam content based on introductory level topics that are compatible with the level of knowledge and experience required to establish eligibility to sit for the exam. The CPSGT exam blueprint will mirror the exam blueprint of the RPSGT exam.
BRPT is in the process of building web resources in support of the certificate exam and anticipates opening the application process for the exam in the last quarter of 2009.
“Announcing the development of a new exam always generates questions,” says Appenzeller. “Further details related to the CPSGT exam will be released at the 2009 BRPT Symposium in Savannah, GA September 18-20. We believe this is a good move for our field. We look forward to launching the introductory-level, CPSGT certificate exam and to keeping the RPSGT credential strong as the gold standard for sleep technologists.”

BRPT Eliminates A-STEP Requirement for 6-Month RPSGT Candidates
April 24, 2009
(McLean, VA – April 24, 2009) — The Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) has announced the elimination of the A-STEP Self-Study (online) Modules requirement for candidates applying for the RPSGT exam through Pathway #2. Candidates qualifying through Pathway #2 hold another current allied health credential and have six months experience in polysomnography. The change in eligibility is effective immediately.
The A-STEP Self-Study Modules have been required for all RPSGT exam candidates except graduates of CAAHEP-accredited programs since July 1, 2008. The decision to eliminate the requirement for Pathway #2 candidates was made at the most recent Board meeting of the BRPT Board of Directors.
When announcing the decision, BRPT President Becky Appenzeller, RPSGT, R. EEG T., CNIM stated, “In reviewing exam statistics from the past several testing windows, we determined that the performance of Pathway #2 candidates – credentialed allied health professionals – was significantly stronger than the performance of 18-month candidates, and that the performance and pass rate had not been enhanced by the increased requirement. Based on these statistics, continuing to require the modules for Pathway #2 candidates is difficult to justify; we felt eliminating it immediately was appropriate.”
Appenzeller added, “The A-STEP module requirement remains in place for Pathway #1 – 18-month experiential candidates. We continue to share the commitment of the Allied Professional Sleep Societies to strengthening the educational opportunities leading to the RPSGT credential.”
Pathway #2 candidates are also no longer required to submit proof of completion of secondary education with their application to sit for the RPSGT exam. However, that requirement remains in place for 18-month experiential candidates.
