STAR for Educators

Become a STAR Provider

The STAR Program recognizes sleep technology education programs that meet BRPT standards for candidate eligibility.

STAR designation helps education providers demonstrate the quality of their program while providing students with a pathway toward eligibility for BRPT examinations.

Benefits of STAR Designation

  • Recognition by the BRPT
  • Exam eligibility pathway support for students
  • Program provider number for tracking student exam performance
  • Inclusion on the BRPT list of approved STAR programs
  • Access to STAR program resources and updates

STAR Program Categories

STAR-designated programs are approved in one or more education categories based on their format and instructional approach:

  • Self-Study – Flexible, self-paced programs that are typically delivered online or through independent study.
  • Focused – Structured programs that combine self-study education with at least 80 hours of in-person lecture and hands-on skills training.
  • Focused 2 – Programs that consist of at least 80 hours of in-person lecture and hands-on skills training and must be paired with a STAR-approved Self-Study program to satisfy eligibility requirements.

STAR Program Requirements

To receive STAR designation, education programs must:

  • Be led by a program director who holds the BRPT credential covered by the program.
  • Utilize qualified instructors and content developers with expertise in sleep technology, sleep medicine, respiratory care, electroneurodiagnostics, or a related specialty.
  • Provide assessments to evaluate student knowledge and comprehension.
  • Use current references, educational materials, and instructional methods that reflect industry standards.
  • Issue certificates documenting successful completion of program requirements.
  • Not hold, or intend to pursue, AASM A-STEP accreditation.
  • Not hold, or intend to pursue, CAAHEP/CoA accreditation.

How It Works

Programs seeking STAR designation must complete an application and undergo a program review process. The following must be submitted with the application:

  • Course brochure/advertisement
  • Program curriculum
  • 3 sample exams
  • Sample certificate of completion
  • Sample program evaluation
  • Program director curriculum vitae
  • List of key faculty and their credentials

Effective January 1, 2027, STAR-designated programs must reapply every five years to maintain their designation.

STAR designation is available only to programs that are not accredited by CAAHEP or CoARC.

Exam Candidates

Considering a STAR Program?

STAR programs are BRPT-approved education programs that may help candidates meet eligibility requirements for the CPSGT, RPSGT, and CCSH examinations, depending on the eligibility pathway selected.

If you are exploring a career in sleep technology or preparing to pursue a BRPT credential, a STAR program may provide the education needed to support your exam eligibility.

Why Choose a STAR Program?

  • Learn from a BRPT-approved education provider
  • Build foundational sleep technology knowledge
  • Support eligibility for BRPT exams
  • Explore flexible education options

Important to Know

STAR designation applies to the education program—not to individual students. Candidates must still meet all eligibility requirements for the exam they wish to take.
