Statement From The Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists In Response To The ABSM’s September 27 News Release

McLean, VA – September 29, 2011 – The BRPT read with interest the recent ABSM press release regarding the number of RPSGT credential holders opting to accept the offer of ABSM RST equivalency — for a fee of $25 — without a requirement to sit for the RST exam. The RST exam has not been administered to a single sleep professional, therefore the only way for ABSM to issue the credential now is to allow technologists to pay for the “equivalency” by using their RPSGT credential plus a fee.

We strongly disagree with ABSM President Dr. Nathaniel Watson’s statement that the number of RPSGTs who have opted into RST equivalency “…affirms the value of the ABSM’s new registry exam and the RST credential…” It is not possible to “affirm the value” of a credential for which no exam has yet been given, reviewed for reliability and validity, and validated by an independent third party.

No one needs the RST credential if you have earned the RPSGT credential. The RPSGT credential is positioned in all accreditation and licensing bodies. Those individuals currently described as holders of the RST credential are, in fact, holders of the RPSGT credential: a credential which Dr. Watson and other representatives of the AASM leadership have previously indicated is not an indicator of readiness to perform the primary duties of a polysomnographic technologist. This was offered as the reason ABSM created the RST credential in the first place. That assertion was made even as the RPSGT — a 32 year old, NCCA-accredited credential held by over 17,000 sleep technologists worldwide, is positioned as “equivalent” to the RST exam. How do the opposing statements for the RST creation and the one granting RPSGTs “equivalency” for $25 make sense?

The number of RST credential holders is being built on the recognized strength of the RPSGT credential, with financial support from the $31,250 RPSGTs have paid to ABSM. This does not “affirm the value” of an untried credential.

What is valuable and important to note, is that not a single RPSGT holds the credential without having taken and passed the RPSGT exam. At no time in the history of the RPSGT has a technologist been awarded the credential without sitting for the exam.

BRPT Announces First Andrea Patterson Scholarship Winner

Polysomnography Student at Sandhills Community College in North Carolina Receives $2,500

McLean, VA – January 20, 2011 – The Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) today announced that Dana Marie Mason Daniels, of Raleigh, North Carolina is the winner of the first Andrea Patterson Memorial Scholarship. Daniels is a student enrolled in the Polysomnography Technology Associates Degree Program at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Daniels worked for 17 years as a telecommunications specialist, before her company eliminated her division due to the struggling economy. Following extensive research into the allied health fields, coupled with a deep personal connection to sleep disorders through family members affected with Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Daniels was eager to take on a new challenge in the field of sleep technology.

Said BRPT President Janice East, RPSGT, R. EEG T., “The BRPT is honored to recognize such a determined and hard working student as Dana with this award. I’m impressed by her motivation and strong interest in patient care, professional growth and leadership. I’m certain she will go on to make great contributions to our profession.”

According to Bonnie Robertson, CRT, RPSGT, Chair of the Andrea Patterson Memorial Scholarship Committee and past BRPT president, “As a result of today’s tough economic times, Dana had to pursue a new career path from scratch. She was adamant about educational training and starting on the right track. By immersing herself in a comprehensive academic program she is laying the foundation for a strong career in polysomnography.”

“I’m extremely excited and grateful to receive this award,” said Dana Marie Mason Daniels. “The tuition grant will ease the financial burden, allowing me to focus on my coursework and clinicals. My goal is to someday become the manager of a sleep center. I can’t wait to apply what I’m learning now, and what I’m certain to learn along the way, to helping patients with sleep disorders.”

Daniels is on track to graduate in the Spring of 2012 after which she plans to take the RPSGT examination. She is a student member of the NC Association of Sleep Technologists and the National Sleep Foundation. In addition, Daniels holds a Bachelors of Science degree from East Carolina University and an Associate of Arts degree from Peace College.

The Andrea Patterson Memorial Scholarship Program, named in honor of an early and highly regarded leader in the field of sleep technology, awards a $2,500 tuition grant each year to a promising student of polysomnography. Scholarship applicants must be enrolled in or accepted by a CAAHEP-accredited program in PSG or a CoARC-accredited program with a PSG add-on.

Four Basic A-STEP Modules Dropped from RPSGT Pathway #1 and Pathway #4 Eligibility Requirements; Four New Supplementary Modules Added

The Board of Registered Polysomnograhic Technologists has announced a modification in the A-STEP self-learning module requirement for RPSGT Pathway #1 and Pathway #4 candidates. Candidates testing after January 1, 2011 will not be required to complete the following four basic A-STEP modules:

  • Evaluation of Sleep
  • Pediatrics
  • Patient Assessment
  • Patient Interaction and Professional Behavior

The following four A-STEP supplementary modules have been added to the Pathway #1 and Pathway #4 eligibility requirements:

  • Supplementary Module 1: Waveforms
  • Supplementary Module 2: Sleep Stages
  • Supplementary Module 3: Scoring Respiratory Events
  • Supplementary Module 4: Arousals, EEG Abnormalities, Movements and Cardiac Events

Candidates applying to sit for the RPSGT exam under Pathway #1 or Pathway #4 and planning to test after January 1, 2011 must submit proof of the four designated supplementary A-STEP modules to establish eligibility to test. The total number of A-STEP modules required to establish eligibility under Pathways #1 and #4 remains at 14.

Notes BRPT President Janice East, “The decision to realign the Pathway #1 and Pathway #4 eligibility requirements was made after a careful review of RPSGT candidate performance over several testing cycles. Candidates have performed consistently well in the areas covered by the four basic modules eliminated from the RPSGT eligibility requirements. The four supplementary modules address areas of consistent weakness in candidate performance. We are always working to balance the overall cost associated with sitting for the RPSGT exam with our profession’s strong commitment to education. With that in mind, we have held the number of required modules at 14. We want to emphasize, however, that candidates – and particularly Pathway #1 candidates, who are not required to complete a full A-STEP program – are strongly encouraged to complete all A-STEP self-learning modules as part of their preparation to sit for the RPSGT exam.”

Dave Hargett, the current Public Member of the BRPT Board of Directors, passed away on Sunday, August 22 in Bolingbrook, Illinois. For a complete obituary please follow this link: Dave Hargett Obituary

Dave Hargett’s passion and commitment to the field of sleep medicine took numerous forms. He was a tireless leader in obstructive sleep apnea patient advocacy and a devoted Public Member of the BRPT Board of Directors, representing the interests of consumers and the public. His service on the BRPT Board began in January 2009.

“A dedicated patient advocate, Dave’s perspective and insights were invaluable to our work over the past two years,” said BRPT President Janice East, RPSGT, R. EEG T. “He represented us at a number of professional events and his strong commitment to patient advocacy and the delivery of quality patient care never wavered. Dave had a particular interest in on-going patient education and the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea as a chronic illness. In addition, Dave was instrumental in the continuing review of the Board’s bylaws, policies and procedures. He also actively encouraged BRPT to begin to build a presence in the social media arena as a means of strengthening the community of BRPT credential holders. He will be greatly missed.”

Diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea in 1994, Hargett’s sleep apnea was successfully treated with CPAP therapy. He began attending a local A.W.A.K.E. group in 1995 and coordinated two sleep apnea support groups affiliated with the A.W.A.K.E. Network of the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA). In 2002, Hargett joined the Board of Directors of the ASAA and served as Chairman since 2004.
