RPSGT Exam Blueprint

The RPSGT examination consists of 175 multiple choice items. Of these, 150 items count toward the candidates’ scores, and 25 are pretest items that are not scored.

General Knowledge Required

Medical terminology, safety, verbal and written communication skills, ethics, patient confidentiality, basic patient care and emergency procedures, basic math skills and calculations, computer skills.

Job Task Analysis Summary

Job task analyses (often referred to as role delineation studies, practice analyses, audits of practice, task analyses or job analyses) are used to validate certification examinations and provide a basis for defending the appropriateness of the examination content (Kane, 1997). By assessing what sleep technologists do in their practice, this JTA ensures that the content specifications for the RPSGT and CPSGT are current and relevant. Content validity in a certification examination provides evidence that the roles addressed in the examination reflect actual practices necessary for successful performance.

The job analysis methodology used to study the sleep technologist role consisted of three main steps. Initially, an expert panel recruited by BRPT was asked to delineate the major responsibilities of a sleep technologist and the tasks associated with each of those major responsibilities. This expert panel also delineated the knowledge needed to perform the tasks and responsibilities that they had outlined, as well as helping to craft demographic items for inclusion on a survey of incumbents in the field. Next, incumbents in the field were surveyed about the frequency and the importance of the delineated responsibilities and tasks, the importance of each of the listed knowledge areas, and their own demographic information. Finally, the expert panel reconvened to review the survey findings and develop the new test specifications.

The 2022 Job Task Analysis was based on a combination of expert panel meetings and a survey of sleep technologists. A description of the work in a field or in a profession is typically developed in job task analyses through a logical analysis of the literature or through panels of experts. Delineating the important tasks and/or knowledge required for competent practice is a lengthy and complex process. In this study, an expert panel was used to delineate the content for a survey of incumbents in the field. The final outcome of this process is new test specifications for the RPSGT and CPSGT that reflect current and relevant practice in the field of polysomnographic sleep technology.

Clinical Experience

Candidates for Pathway 1 must:

  • Complete a STAR-designated Self-Study education program following the guidelines listed within the RPSGT Candidate Handbook.
  • Complete a minimum of 960 hours of clinical experience that includes on-site polysomnography duties performed as direct patient recording and/or scoring.
  • Complete clinical experience within a 3-year period prior to the exam.

Submit:

  • Proof of completion of the required STAR education.
  • Documentation of secondary education. Proof can include high school or college unofficial transcript, official transcript or copy of diploma.
  • Documentation of current CPR/BLS certification for healthcare workers that meets the most recent AHA Guidelines or international equivalent. Certification must include a live skills component (in-person or hybrid; mannequin-based skills testing accepted). The American Heart Association’s RQI certification is acceptable. Online-only certifications are not accepted.
  • Proof of 960 hours of clinical experience that includes on-site polysomnography duties performed as direct patient recording and/or scoring. Documentation Requirements

An Important Note: Applicants who have completed the ASTEP Intro to Sleep Medicine for Technologists Modules must purchase and submit their ASTEP transcript as proof of completion. Standalone CEC certificates are not accepted as evidence of completing the required educational program.

Healthcare Credential

Candidates for Pathway 2 must:

  • Complete a minimum of 960 hours of clinical experience that includes on-site polysomnography duties performed as direct patient recording and/or scoring.
  • Complete clinical experience within a 3-year period prior to the exam.
  • Hold current allied health credential listed here: List of Accepted Allied Health Credentials. The CPSGT Credential is not accepted as a healthcare credential for this pathway.

Submit:

  • Proof of a current and accepted healthcare credential.
  • Documentation of current CPR/BLS certification for healthcare workers that meets the most recent AHA Guidelines or international equivalent. Certification must include a live skills component (in-person or hybrid; mannequin-based skills testing accepted). The American Heart Association’s RQI certification is acceptable. Online-only certifications are not accepted.
  • Verification of Experience section on application must be completed. Documentation Requirements

CAAHEP/CoARC Graduate

Candidates for Pathway 3 must:

  • Graduate from, or be within 2 months of graduating from, a polysomnography program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC)
  • Accredited programs include:
  • Stand-alone polysomnography programs
  • Add-on programs within electroneurodiagnostic or respiratory care programs

Submit:

  • Proof of graduating from the CAAHEP or CoARC polysomnography program. Proof can be submitted by way of an official transcript in a sealed envelope, an official letter from your Program Director, or a copy of your diploma. Those who are eligible for graduation within 2 months can submit proof by way of an official letter from your Program Director.
  • Documentation of current CPR/BLS certification for healthcare workers that meets the most recent AHA Guidelines or international equivalent. Certification must include a live skills component (in-person or hybrid; mannequin-based skills testing accepted). The American Heart Association’s RQI certification is acceptable. Online-only certifications are not accepted.

Focused Training

Candidates for Pathway 4 must:

  • Complete a minimum of 960 hours of clinical experience that includes on-site polysomnography duties performed as direct patient recording and/or scoring.
  • Complete a STAR-designated Focused education program OR both a STAR-designated Self-Study education program AND a STAR-designated Focused 2 program, within a 3-year period prior to the exam. Click here to see a list of all the STAR Programs.
  • Complete clinical experience within a 3-year period prior to the exam.

Submit:

  • Proof of completion of the required STAR program(s).
  • Documentation of secondary education, such as a high school or college transcript (official or unofficial) or a copy of your diploma.
  • Proof of 960 hours of clinical experience that includes on-site polysomnography duties performed as direct patient recording and/or scoring. Documentation Requirements

Candidates for Pathway 5 must:

  • Complete International tertiary/post secondary education in science/medical science or related discipline with a major component of human anatomy and physiology included in the curriculum.
  • Complete a minimum of 960 hours of clinical experience that includes on-site polysomnography duties performed as direct patient recording and/or scoring.
  • Complete clinical experience within a 3-year period prior to the exam.

Submit:

  • Proof of completion of tertiary/post secondary education from a country outside of the United States.
  • Proof of residency outside of the United States.
  • Proof of 960 hours of clinical experience that includes on-site polysomnography duties performed as direct patient recording and/or scoring. Documentation Requirements
